In No Words Or Less

Lima sat as still as she could in the quarantine zone, attached to a panel via a ZG cord. Her heart was beating so hard that she would slowly bob backwards, until the cord went taut, springing her forward gently.
“Sarvas, L. Please. move. to. the. edge. of. the. zone.” one of the Drones said, in the careful speech of someone with a vocal implant. Enunciating each word.
Lima slowly unhooked her ZG cord and stood straight. Her legs tingled for a moment after being crossed for too long. Her grav boots made a “snick” noise as she touched onto the panels below and she walked to the red line.
“Please. place. your. appendage. on. the. appropriate. panel. and. state. your. name. and. social. rank. and. current. residence.” the Drone motioned towards the pods sliding up out of the panel-floor.
Lima carefully checked the icons for Human and placed her right hand, palm down, on the bulb. “I am Lima Sarvas. Human Attendant Pilot. Ship K65JG Sweet Dreamer.”
There was a warmth and a tingle on her palm and the bulb flashed the orange Wait signal. Lima removed her hand. She could feel a sneeze coming on, and that would be so bad here in the quarantine zone. She was not sick, but she got a tickle in her nose when she was nervous and dehydrated. Right now she was both of those.
She tried not to wiggle her nose or to fidget too much. She kept a careful eye on the black mask of the nearest Drone.
She blew air out through her nose to try and stop the sneeze from creeping any further.
The scanning bulb stopped flashing and she held her breath for a moment while it cycled. Green. She was through.
After 5 days in this little padded hell, she could finally go out into the fresh air of Aroon and see the lakes and the forests again. 14 years she’d been gone. Most of those on the Dreamer with Klan and the rest of the crew. Like family, but not quite.
A year ago she’d felt the pull home begin, and she’d started making plans and talking to the Captain about heading on a shipping lane that could possibly get near Aroon in the Avnar system. The Captain was very kind about it. He seemed to understand the longing for home she had. He did his best and got her as close as they could, with the Dreamer.
She hopped a few transports and ended up at Aroon’s space dock and the long wait in quarantine. Aroon was still a “clean” planet, so the laws were very strict. Her bags were scanned repeatedly, at random intervals. She was given base gear to wear, while her clothes were carefully decontaminated repeatedly and she was sent through sonic and gas decontamination pods about 7 times in the 5 days she was at the space dock.
But now that was all done, and she could walk those last few panels to the shuttles to the surface.
Home.
sitting on the couch with Tequila
yes… i’ve finally sunk to that… on the couch in my “comfy clothes” with Tequila for company.
Luckily, in this case, the Tequila in question is not in a bottle, but in the body of a young, slightly lunatic, German Sheppard.
I’m looking after (and being looked after) by the vivacious (and LOUD and opinionated) and gorgeous Tequila and the gang (Blues, Rock and Roll) for the long Easter weekend.
I was sitting on the couch with a totally pooped pooch draped over my lap, watching bad TV and sipping tea (when i could reach the table, over the snoring dog). Reason for doggy tiredness is the TWO (yes T-W-O) walks we’ve been on today. First, early this morning, we did our usual jaunt down to the vlei, where Tequila bounded up and down in the water until she couldn’t any more and came and plopped down next to me on the grass. So a soggy, but happy dog (she taught those little waves a LESSON, oh YES ma’am she DID) came home and had a snooze (on the bed, before i could stop her) in the sunshine. Then, around 4pm, I decided to take her to one of my favourite dogwalking spots (i take Tigger and The Gonz there whenever i look after them). We drove down to the lower Tokai forest. She’s never been to the forest, so it was all new – she barked at fallen trees and chased a few pinecones then got down to the serious business of sniffing everything. We met some other dogs, who wanted to have a sniff, but Tequila is a shy girl so she RAN (howling the whole way like she was being chased by lions or something). Luckily they were friendly dogs and soon realised that the more they chased, the faster and further she ran… so they soon gave up and ran off after their humans. She came zooming back to me, all macho and “yeah i coulda kicked their butts, but i was just you know, letting them off with a warning this time” barks at their retreating backs… until the labrador turned around with an “oh yeah?!” and then she was hiding behind my legs (she’s a skinny girl, so she hides well) with waggy tail and a goofy grin. She’s such a loon, she makes me laugh all the time.
But i think she enjoyed it, despite that! She was pretty much exhausted when we got back, so it was straight onto my bed again, in the afternoon sunshine and she’s slept straight through (except for the occasional Tequila update bark/yawp – which is strictly for my benefit) and it’s nearly dinner time, so i expect a cold nose jab any minute now.
Rolly is in the kitchen, already waiting for dinnertime. Blues is out back in the sunshine and i think Rocky is curled up in the potplant in the lounge. It seems to be his favourite current spot.
I’ve been working on the calendar thing, trying out some variations (haven’t posted all of them – just fiddling really) and i’ll start printing next week, see how they come out. Hopefully i can still get them bound by UDMS at UCT, because they are the only people i know of who wirebind and include that little hanging hook in the bindings.
Supposed to go and “meet” some dogs (5 of them, including 2 malamute X wolf) and cats (6 of those) on a smallholding in Scarborough on Tuesday, in a view to house sit at a later date, but i’m really not sure i can handle that many. The lady who recommended me only HAS 1 cat that i look after! Why she thought i’d be able to manage 5 dogs and 6 cats, i don’t know! But anyway, i’m always willing to try things out… see if it will work. Thanks to A.T i’m no longer scared of challenges.
More bad tv tonight. At least it’s friday night. Good Friday.I am Catholic, I do know the origin of the name, but i just don’t understand how it can be called “Good” … but that’s a whole other debate, right?
Missing people.
Had a weird feeling today – i’m African (because i was born and raised here and i love the land) but there’s so much Celt in me that i often have this strong “pull” towards Ireland and the UK. One day, when i’m rich and famous and can afford a first class ticket (or at least a Club World, because i can NEVER travel “economy” again… ) i want to go visit Ireland and Scotland and all those beautiful places that i see in pictures and feel so drawn to.
spreading like fire
The AHS outbreak has spread further, with more reported deaths. Shows cancelled till the 1st May now…
moving down the N1 towards us… but still quite far off, thankfully.
i’m just hoping people will stop being stupid and just stay in one place.
stable the horses from 4pm till 10am the next morning and keep the miggies out of the stables and everything will be ok.
there’s a good shampoo as well, which keeps the nasty little critters from even coming near your horse… i think i’m going to get some of that for the boys (and pony), since B seems unwilling to innoculate them. they go out late anyway, so it should be fine.
My camera is still “in the shop”. they are apparently waiting on a part from JHB which was out of stock until yesterday.
lots of house sitting coming up.
easter weekend, and again in may from the 1st till the 15th (different places, but as each one ends another one starts, so pretty hectic. i’m going to be tired)
feeling a little blah. worried about income now, with no shows on for the whole month.
